The Threat

Robert D'Elia wants to bring in the bulldozers. D'Elia's firm, RAD Ventures, plans to demolish the 28 rent-controlled apartments at Venice Manor, and replace them with 3-story luxuryhomes.

D'Elia calls himself a "Venice Visionary," and his past projects tell us what he has in mind for Venice's future. Two of his developments loom side-by-side on Main Street, the Venice Art Lofts and Dogtown Station. These "art lofts" are way beyond the reach of the many artists who live in Venice, as well as the skater and surfer crowd of Dogtown fame. They are examples of D'Elia's cynical vision: a virtual Venice, a pretend community, with little depth or substance.

D'Elia's plans for Venice Manor
In accordance with this vision for a virtual Venice, D'Elia's development plan for 542-568 Venice Blvd is only for the wealthy.

For a detailed outline of our practical, moral, and legal objections to Robert D'Elia's plan, see the letter (PDF, 380K) that we sent to Councilmember Bill Rosendahl (Los Angeles District 11) and our local Land Use and Planning Committee.

A better alternative
The tenants at Venice Manor are putting together a plan to buy the building we call home. Under our ownership, Venice gets to keep its affordable housing. Read more about our vision.
